We left Los Angeles at 10PM and immediately went to bed in our Roomette. We arrived in Tucson a half hour early, at 8:00AM Mountain Time. We found time to get to the Dining Car and have a wonderful Railroad French Toast breakfast, before de-training. We looked around the platform, (highly recommended) and made a special stop at the memorial for DEA Agent Mike Garbo who was killed on the Sunset Limited train at this very station, a year ago October. On that day, we were told to check out the Virtual Railfan camera at the station, to see what was going on, and so in a small way we felt connected to the event. I was glad to say a prayer for the man and admire the bench they put by the memorial for him. It is on the fence, with places to place fresh flowers.
My plans for the day, were to drive our rental car over to the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum. The route that Google Maps sent us on went through this wonderful area with saguaro cacti all over the mountains. It is called Tucson Mountain Park. It was breathtaking to see and I was glad I finally pulled over to catch some of that beauty. The photo at the top is one of my photos.
The Arizona Sonora Desert Museum was as I expected it to be, since I have been there two other times. It has grown so much in the past decades, and is worth the expense to learn about this area of our Country. The Sonoran Desert is so beautiful and they teach about the varied plants and animals that call this place home.
The gift shop is worth a look, too.
Next stop: Phoenix, Arizona
